The Internet economy is yesterday’s news. Today, every sector of the economy is becoming increasingly digital, powered by the increasingly ubiquitous connection to the Internet. Around the globe and across sectors, the Internet has become a horizontal enabler, opening doors to greater efficiencies, innovation and new business models. Yet it may not be immediately clear to traditional businesses how they can use the Internet to empower their businesses, what capabilities they need and what pitfalls should they be mindful of.

About 44% of Vietnam’s population was online in 2014, and the proportion will only increase as access to the Internet becomes more affordable, and consumers and businesses increasingly recognize the benefits of using the Internet. The role of e-commerce in Vietnam is already becoming evident, where in 2014, e-commerce accounted for over 2% of the country’s retail sales, with almost USD3 billion in B2C turnover. In this forum we look at the opportunities and challenges facing businesses in Vietnam as the growth of the Internet, especially access through mobile, plays an increasingly important role in how business models are formed and what more can be done to assist businesses as they navigate through this new emerging digital economy.
