22 January 2021: TRP Seminar on IP of Algorithms in Open Innovation

Date: 22 January 2021, 10:00 – 11:00 am (HKT)

Many cities have open data platforms for transport data, but in Hong Kong, transport providers are all private companies. At the University of Hong Kong, we are building a trusted third-party data space, where different data controllers contribute data which is analysed through various software tools. Some of the data is also used for training an AI tool provided by a private tech company.  The arrangements are based on MOUs between the operators and tech companies and the University.

In smart city collaborative projects, there are often many different partners, large corporations, startups, universities, NGOs – with many different views on how to deal with IP and innovation.  In an open innovation scenario, what are good models for collaboration, sharing results of discoveries as public common good and/or maintaining strict IP regimes?

In this online seminar, Katherine Sheriff and Dr. Li Yahong together with her PhD student, Mr. Wang Wei, will discuss IP and innovation in the context of business-to-government data-sharing initiative with transport operators and payment providers. Katherine is an experienced speaker and Thought Leader in the dynamic field of emerging technologies. She is an attorney based in Washington D.C. and received her Doctor of Law (J.D.) from the Emory University School of Law. Dr. Li is an Associate Professor and Program Director for LLM in Tech&IPL at Faculty of Law, and Associate Director (IP) at Technology Transfer Office at the University of Hong Kong. She received her JSD and JSM from Stanford Law School.
